[Infographic] Big Data Ethics

When we are young, we learn the difference between right and wrong. Don’t steal toys from other children, share-and-share-alike, don’t hit or call someone names. These are the basics that make up our ability to function in the world; the rules that make up our ethical code of conduct.

In the world of big data, however, there has been no guiding parental figure to teach the correct way to behave, and as such, we have seen huge corruption and mistreatment of people and their data online.

The field of big data ethics exists to provide a framework for the ethical use of big data so that no person is disadvantaged or mistreated because of their online presence, lack of knowledge or understanding, or simply because they exist within a minority group.

There are 2.5 quintillion bytes of data created each day and a cyber-attack threatens that data every 39 seconds. This is a frightening figure when you consider how entwined our daily lives have become with digital devices that rely on and generate data. Big data ethics wants to ensure that digital spaces are safer and more secure for consumers - protecting their data as a priority.

The global big data market is forecasted to grow to 103 billion U.S. dollars by 2027, so there has never been a more urgent time to ensure a standard of ethics is enforced in this sphere.

In this infographic, we cover the 5 main areas of concern when it comes to the ethics of big data. These are:

  1. Informed consent
  2. Privacy
  3. Ownership
  4. Algorithms and Objectivity
  5. The Big Data Divide

If you would like to learn more about the ethics of big data, read our in depth blog here where we delve deeper into each of these categories.
