Threads for Business: What Marketers Need to Know
The newest platform to take the social media world by storm is Threads. The new app from Meta was launched officially on 5th July and offers a new space for sharing text updates and joining in with public conversations. Like all social platforms, it presents brands with an opportunity to engage and interact with their customers and audience.
That being said, it won't be right for every business, so it’s important to consider if it will fit with your company’s marketing strategy. So, what is Threads?
Threads is a social media platform that allows users to post and share text, images, and videos, while also providing features such as replies, reposts, and likes to engage with other users' content. With very similar functionality, features and overall look, it is the newest kid on the block to rival Twitter and already has gained immense traction with over 30 million sign ups on just day one of its launch.
Because Threads is owned by Instagram, only those who have an Instagram account can create a Threads account, using the same handle across both. Because of this close integration, it offers a new feature where users can easily share across platforms, allowing them to share posts from Threads directly to their Instagram stories.
Like Instagram, your feed on Threads will include Threads posted by users you follow, and also include content from users you haven’t yet followed. Each post has a limit of 500 characters (much longer than Twitter's limit of 280) and can be accompanied by links, photos and videos up to 5 minutes in length. At the moment, there is no desktop version of Threads, only a downloadable app for mobile but we expect this to be rectified once further development has been made to the product.
How to create a Threads account
Joining is relatively straightforward provided you already have an Instagram account. If you don’t, you will need to create an Instagram account first. Here is a step by step guide to joining Threads:
- Download the app: Go to your mobile devices app store (Google Play Store for Android or App Store for iOS) and search for "Threads from Instagram." Download and install the app on your device.
- Log in: On the launch screen, it will automatically pull in your Instagram details (provided you are logged into Instagram on that device). Depending on your privacy and security settings, you might need to approve and verify the login attempt within your Instagram account directly.
- Set up your profile: Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Threads profile. Here you can decide if you want a public or private profile. Note you can set your Threads account to public, while keeping your Instagram private, and vice versa. You can also select if you want to follow the same accounts that you follow on Instagram and you can upload a new profile picture or import directly from your Instagram.
- Start using Threads: Once your profile is set up, you can start using Threads to connect with your audience and start sharing updates, photos, and videos.

Key considerations for businesses using Threads
Before incorporating Threads into your strategy, don’t forget to consider the following:
- Instagram account requirement: To utilise Threads, having an Instagram account is a prerequisite.
- Direct messaging: Threads currently lacks a direct messaging function. However, if customers engage with you on Threads, you can still reach out to them via Instagram's direct messaging feature.
- Character limit: Each post within Threads is limited to 500 characters, so aim to create concise and impactful messaging.
- Absence of hashtags: Currently, Threads does not support the use of hashtags, limiting their effectiveness as a discoverability tool. At the moment, users can only use the search tool to look up other users – both those they already follow and those they don't follow.
- Account deactivation: Once you create a Threads account, deactivating it is the only available option if you decide to stop using the platform. Permanent removal of the account is not possible unless you delete your entire Instagram account.
- Advertising opportunities: At the moment, Threads is ad-free and you can’t promote your posts either. We suspect this is likely to change in the future as it is still in the early development stages. Alongside the lack of ads, there’s no trending section or an explore page.
